Blastomycosis is an infection caused by a fungus called Blastomyces dermatitidis, it is a dimorphic fungus because it has both a mould and yeast phase.

The fungus is found in acidic, moist soil in various parts of Ontario and around the Great Lakes.

The presence of Blastomyces dermatitidis may be indicated by a white or tan mould.

People can get blastomycosis after breathing in the microscopic fungal spores.
